OREM, Utah - June 4, 2001--Caldera International, Inc. (Nasdaq: CALD), today announced through Caldera K.K., its subsidiary in Tokyo, Japan, that Taiwan FamilyMart has implemented Caldera UnixWare (formerly SCO UnixWare) at over 1,000 stores.
FamilyMart purchased UnixWare operating systems so that each store can manage sales results, inventory control and ordering. UnixWare software unifies POS terminals, cash registers, scanner, and receipt printers and processes all store transactions. It also connects store computers at various locations to their data center at headquarters for data exchange.
"FamilyMart, one of the top convenience store chains in Asia, currently operates 5,812 stores in Japan and 1,050 stores in Taiwan," said Kiyoshi Baba, director of Family Mart. "For Taiwan's store computer, UnixWare matched our needs. For our Japan headquarters system, we use UnixWare as the operating system for the file server distributing transactions over satellite. In addition, we introduced UnixWare's clustering system to be able to operate 24x7, 365 days a year."
"FamilyMart chose UnixWare because of its stability and cost performance running on Intel standard hardware," said Raymond Mak, vice president Asia Pacific sales for Caldera. "A top retail chain in Asia running UnixWare strengthens the product's hold in the retail market and strengthens our presence in the region. This success is opening additional doors to companies who are evaluating UnixWare as well as our OpenLinux-based solutions. In addition, we invite companies to evaluate the recently announced Open UNIX 8 -- a platform based on UnixWare 7 that runs both Linux and UNIX applications."
