LINDON, Utah, May 27, 2003 -- The SCO Group (Nasdaq: SCOX) today announced that the British Army is rolling out an asset management system for its fleet of helicopters, based on SCO's UnixWare operating system. The project, worth more than $5.5 million, should complete its roll out by the end of 2004.
The WRAM (Work Recording and Asset Management) solution from Spirent Systems is being deployed on the British Army's Lynx and Gazelle helicopters and will be rolled out to Apache helicopters later in the year. WRAM tracks the life stage and history of all the individual components within the helicopter.
The system is critical to the safety of the helicopters and the efficient management of the Army's inventory. "Many of the components for our helicopters are extremely valuable and can be worth thousands of pounds each. By accurately tracking their life cycle we envisage potential cost savings in the region of millions of pounds, together with improvements to the airworthiness support to the user fleets," explains Commander Terry O'Reilly, Ministry of Defense. "The SCO Group's UnixWare 7 operating system is already used extensively by the Royal Navy and it made absolute sense to deploy the same UNIX platform for the WRAM solution."
The WRAM solution includes a GUI (graphical user interface), which was designed by The SCO Group's Professional Services division in conjunction with Spirent Systems to give the look and feel of a Windows interface to an existing character-based application.
UnixWare 7 software will be clustered using SCO's Reliant HA to provide the necessary high availability, whilst the implementation of Tarantella allows the WRAM technology to be accessed via an industry standard browser, enabling the British Army to give users secure access to any application, from anywhere.
The Ministry of Defense has also chosen SCO Authentication for Microsoft Active Directory to enable Army users to access both Windows and UNIX resources with a single username and password. This removes the overhead on systems administrators of implementing and managing password synchronization scripts and eradicates the issue of users having to remember multiple user names and passwords. The British Army anticipates that this solution will be used across the whole of its aviation organization by the end of its rollout. Once the rollout is complete, the SCO environment will be supported by SCO TEAM Services and managed remotely through a secure browser using SCO Manager. With SCO Manager the British Army will be able to remotely provide asset management, distribute software and provide health monitoring for their Windows and UNIX systems.
